Samuel Austin Chapin

Samuel Austin Chapin was the brother of Mrs. Wheaton and a trustee from 1889 to 1890. While a young man, Chapin fought in the Black Hawk War. He later traveled to California to join the gold rush of 1849.

Favorite brother of Mrs. Wheaton, Samuel Chapin was often given commissions by her to assist other members of their family. He and his wife lived with Mrs. Wheaton after their return from California in 1884. Always active in local politics, Mr. Chapin was largely responsible for the enclosure of Norton Green.

Chapin Hall was named for Samuel Austin Chapin in 1901.
