Coeducation Begins

In January, President Emerson announces the trustees’ recommendation, in principle, to admit male students. “Forums of the Future” is held on campus and across the country to give alumnae, parents, and others the opportunity to express their opinions about coeducation.

In May, the trustees take a final vote and make Wheaton coeducational. Planning for coeducation begins with the formation of the Commission of Coeducation Planning Council. Task forces study student life, athletics, student recruitment, local community development, and the classroom learning environment.
