Reverend Horace James Speaks at Commencement

The Reverend Horace James of Worcester, MA, speaks at commencement.

A native of Milford, MA, James graduated from Yale in 1840 and went on to study theology at Andover. He became pastor of Worcester’s Old South Church in 1852. James was the secretary of the Worcester Temperance League, promoting “total abstinence from the use of intoxicating liquors as a beverage,” secretary of the Worcester Lyceum and Library Association and secretary of the Natural History Society.

James resigned from his pastorate to become chaplain and, later, assistant quartermaster of the 25th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers, entering the service October 28, 1861, and mustering out April 27, 1864.

After his service, James became pastor of the First Congregational Church of Lowell, MA, and editor and proprietor of The Congregationalist.
