A native of Milford, MA, James graduated from Yale in 1840 and went on to study theology at Andover. He became pastor of Worcester’s Old South Church in 1852. James was the secretary of the Worcester Temperance League, promoting “total abstinence from the use of intoxicating liquors as a beverage,” secretary of the Worcester Lyceum and Library Association and secretary of the Natural History Society
