Walter Oscar McIntire Speaks at Commencement

“Dr. Mac,” Walter Oscar McIntire was a professor of philosophy and education from 1914 to 1941. A beloved teacher, students knew him as gentle, dedicated, serious and approachable. He performed marriage ceremonies for many alumnae, usually in Cole Memorial Chapel. In 1941, he spoke at commencement and was awarded an honorary degree.

Dr. McIntire grew up in the Philippines, and came to Wheaton directly after receiving his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1914. He and his family lived in Carter Cottage, a house then on East Main Street near Mary Lyon Hall.

McIntire Hall was dedicated to Walter Oscar McIntire in 1959.
